You are watching HowToPlayAnySong.com. My name is Joe Wiles with the Rock ‘N Roll Conservatory and in this video we’re going to take a look at AC/DC‘s Thunderstruck from their Razors Edge record.
Now there’s a lot of controversy over the opening guitar riff in this song. Whether it’s all left-hand tapping or whether we use a guitar pick on it or on some notes or all the notes. But we’re going to settle that controversy here today and I’ll tell you when we get to the tutorial how to do it.
We’re going to go over the introductory riff in this tutorial. We’re also going to go over Malcolm Young’s other guitar part that is playing behind Angus Young’s. So we’re going to learn two things today and let’s get started.
Ac Dc Thunderstruck Guitar Chords
Intro
Now the intro to “Thunderstruck,” like I mentioned, there’s a lot of controversy about how this is performed. The reality is whether you play it with all left hand tapping or with picking every note or picking only the down strums, it’s still going to sound like Thunderstruck. But what we’re going to teach today is picking on the down strums.
The riff starts with an open B, in fact the whole riff is on the B string. You’ll hit the open B with an up strum. Then you’ll come down to the 4th fret of the B string and do a down strum, now pull it off.
Now with your ring finger go up to the 7th fret of the B string, hit it with a down strum, pull it off and you’ll repeat that eight times maybe sixteen. Sounds like this, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, apparently eight times.
Then we’ll move that whole riff to the 5 and 8, the 5th fret and the 8th fret of the B string. Sounds like this, we’ll repeat that eight times, five, six, seven, eight and then we’ll go back and fourth.
All right lets put that all together slowly and smoothly this is what it sounds like. All right lets try that to speed, one, two, three, four, that’s it.
Verse Guitar 1
Now right after that introduction Angus goes through a riff that carries on through the rest of the song. We’ll call this the verse riff even though it occurs in the introduction but this is that riff.
It starts out on the 12th fret of the B, basically the same idea you hit a note then you pull it off. So it’s going to start on the 12th fret of the B, pull it off, 10 pull it off, 9 pull it off.
Back to 10, pull it off, back down to 9, pull it off, 7 pull it off, 9 pull it off, 5 pull it off. Then 7 pull it off , 4 pull it off, 7-4-7-4-7-4-7-4, we’ll do that bit four times. I think I got that right.
The frets and sequence are 12-10-9-10-9-7-9-5-7-4-7-4-7-4-7-4, but you pull off each one. This is what it sounds like slowly. This is what that riff sounds like to tempo, one, two, three, four.
Verse Guitar 2
Now the verse part for the second guitar is really simple, it’s just a three-finger power chord. It’s a B5 chord. It’s on the 2nd fret of the A, 4th fret of the D, 4th fret of the G. We’re gonna leave our fingers there, but how we pick it is the tricky part. This is what it sounds like.
